Producer Notes

Caymus Vineyards was founded in 1972 by the Wagner family in Napa Valley's Rutherford district. The Wagners originally immigrated to the San Francisco Bay area from Alsace in the late 1880s. The winery produces both a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and since 1975, a Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, differentiated by superior fruit and additional barrel aging. The name, Caymus, has dual... More »

The up-front, sexy 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa reveals the vintage's ripe headiness along with loads of glycerin, a juicy, fat texture, a dark ruby/purple color, and abundant cassis, herb, licorice, and smoke characteristics. Drink it over the next decade.

Aromas of herb, currant and cedar are richer and fuller on the palate. Firms up, with dried currant, earth, vanilla bean and herbal sage notes. The tannins are tight. Decant. 30,192 cases made.

Excellent, very smooth tannins, bery balanced with a nice toasty oak and mineral, dried currant.

we drank the Showket and Caymus Napa side by side. Both are drinking great and able to cellar for a few more years. Both had similar taste profiles - good dark fruit, light oak finish. I loved both of them.

Dark blood color showing no signs of age, in fact it was still pretty tight on entry so I gave it a day to decant. Second night it was showing more signs of life but it still was mostly one dimensional with cherry notes, some richness, and restrained finish. The '05 was much better IMO

Consumed along side a 2005 Clos Apalta, a 2003 BV Georges de Latour PR and a 2004 Caymus Special Selection. This wine should have been tasted just before the Special Selection but followed it. As a result, the Napa cuvee tasted lackluster by comparison but displayed a similar flavor profile. Had it been the only wine on the table, this wine could have stood its own against any food paired with it. Like every other 2004 Caymus Napa I've had, this bottle showed plenty of ripe, dark currant fruit, complexity and a bit of spice box on the finish. Another consistently good Caymus offering.

Consistent cab but not remarkable in any way.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
