Producer Notes

The mission statement reads, in part, "To produce organically grown fruit and with this fruit make a singular wine of the highest caliber and distinction." By all accounts, Bart and Daphne Araujo are succeeding magnificently. The flagship wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon from their own Eisele Vineyards, is hailed by critics and desired by consumers in every vintage. Though first planted to Zinfandel... More »

The Araujo Sauvignon Blanc gets my vote as the best and most consistent Sauvignon Blanc produced in the United States. The 2004 is a blend of 76% Sauvignon Musque, 19% Sauvignon Blanc, and 5% Viognier. The wine was fermented in stainless steel (76%) and new French oak (24%) and then barrel aged sur lies for eight months prior to bottling. It has a brilliant crystal clear light gold color with a lime green tinge. Intensely perfumed ? on pulling the cork the fragrance spilled out and was discernible from at least a few feet away. Lime, slate, kiwi, pink grapefruit, and lemon scents. Low, lush acidity allayed with a bit of heat in the mouth and finish. Good length with lemon peel zest at the end. The wine is more exotic than past vintages but unfortunately does not have enough acid to support it's really quite remarkable aromatics. While earlier vintages have aged amazingly well (the 1997 remains enjoyable) I would drink this wine up soon.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
