USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley

Red Cabernet Sauvignon
Producer Notes

Born and raised in Napa, trained in winemaking at Sterling and Caymus, Frank Altamura has serious credentials. In 1985 he and his wife Karen began their own quest to make exceptional, collectable wine, turning an old cattle ranch in Wooden Valley into vineyards planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Altamura is proof that you can never get too much of a good thing. The winery produces over 3,500 cases of this wine, which was recently scored 94 points in The Wine Advocate. We have been fans of this Wooden Valley property for years. Try a half case and see what the fuss is about or, better yet, taste it side by side with the 1999 Altamura Cabernet.

Shows the classic Altamura aromatics: black cherry, cedar, cassis and tobacco with hints of violet and lilac arching through the nose. The palate is supple espresso, blackberry plum and densely structured chocolate.

Dark purple, black currant, ripe, nose fills the glass, balanced wine without the alcohol overtones of many Napa cabs. From experience, the Altamura's age very well and it would be good to leave this alone another 5 years and try it then. Had it at a dinner party last night (alongside a 2002 Pichon Lalande) and several people commented how much they really liked it.

Ripe cassis, blackberry, black cherry, hint of spice. Nicely balanced. Should continue to drink nicely.

Aromas: Sandalwood, black cherry, cured tobacco leaf with traces of fragrant purple and white blossoms Palate: A mouth-popping experience with rich, smooth cherry, blackberry, mocha and plum Impression: The latest in a long line of top-flight Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon, focused, balanced and capable of 7 ' 10 years of aging.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
