($42) Saturated violet. Dense, smoky and spicy, with strong aromas of cherry, blackcurrant and violet. Quite ripe, the dark fruit flavors deep and weighty, with good structure and solid but well-knit tannins. Takes on a more elegant quality with air, the flavors making a turn toward red fruit and a mineral note emerging. Finishes sweet, deep and long. Give this some time.

The entry level 2004 Atauta comes from 60- to 150-year-old, biodynamically farmed, mostly ungrafted Tempranillo bush vines. The wine is aged in 100% French oak of which 20% is new. Dark ruby/purple in color, it has an expressive nose of spice box, coffee, black cherry and blackberry. Made in a racy style, with good acidity, this wine admirably combines ripe, sweet fruit with elegance.

A plush, modern red, with sweet blackberry and cassis flavors accented with chocolate and coffee. The tannins are ripe but well-integrated, and the acidity is lively.

Excellent drinking stage, mature but stills lively and somehow fresh. Mature nose of red and blk fruits as well leathery notes, and that 'terroir' unique to Ribera wines. Still have bright future for next 6-10yrs.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
