France - Southern Rhone - Chateauneuf du Pape

Red Rhone Blend
Producer Notes

Clos des Papes is indisputably one of the reference points for premium Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Owned by the Avril family, who has been making wine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since the beginning of the 18th century, this property maintains its distinction of premier status not only because of its exceptional product, but also due to the generosity and graciousness of its owners - Paul (father), Vincent... 96 points. Opened in honor of our new Pope, Francis I. This completely surpassed my high expectations. It was deep, profound, silky smooth and oozed Chateaneuf-du-Pape character, with warm grenache fruit framed by notes of lavender, thyme and spices. It was perfectly balanced, with ample acidity and a finish that went on forever. In a really good place right now, it was a terrific pairing with grilled lamb sirloin seasoned with garlic and Provencale herbs. Can't wait to crack open the 2007. Habemus Papam! (NOTE: The 2005 was Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year.)

The wine was gentle but stern. This initial taste was velvety with a pepper backend with above average tannins. The cedar, cassis and mild strawberry kicked it for me.

If you are still chasing after the supercharged, pricey 2003, I encourage you to eye this vintage as it stacks every ounce of its density and concentration into a much more refined package. Tight, unevolved scents of ripe tobacco, sage, dill and leather brood, simply waiting to explode from this intensely wound elixir. There is a mouthful of expansive, sweet fruit evoking black currant and pure kirsch flavors that are seemingly immense, but oh so tantalizingly plush. I don'tknow how Paul Avril does it, but he manages to shape wines of such bound concentration w/ an uncanny brush of polish, charm and symmetry that you just don'tfind in any other wine.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
