Italy - Tuscany - Brunello di Montalcino

Red Sangiovese
Producer Notes

Argiano is a reliable, 30-hectare estate in Montalcino producing modern style Brunello di Montalcino, with Riservas designated for the best vintages. They also make a Rosso di Montalcino and, since 1995, a "Super Tuscan" called Solengo (Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah). The Villa of Argiano is a magnificent construction, built in the Renaissance by the Peccis, a noble family from Siena.... More »

I pulled the bottle from my cellar at 2PM and opened up at 8PM. We were at a restaurant and they didn't decant it right away: really bad surprise. Very tight, very acidic. We were quite disappointed but then we asked for a decanter and within one hour the wine turned amazing!!! so question: was the one too young, still too cold, or does it need 2 hours of decanter? This is my first Brunello that I opened.

Just when I was growing weary of Italian wines and intentionally reducing my inventory, this wine slapped me in the face. I was grilling pepper spiced T-Bones and opened this wine. Imagine my surprise when I tasted the red currants, dark berries nice tannins and--pepper! Definitely bigger and bolder than most Brunellos. And at a good price if you can find it.

Drink Dates 2009-2019

Source Reviewer Rating Maturity Current (Release) Cost Wine Advocate # 183 Jun 2009 Antonio Galloni 92 Drink: 2009 - 2019 $40-$70 (64) The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is the first Brunello oenologist Hans Vinding-Diers made from start to finish at Argiano, and it represents a significant stylistic shift in direction. Among the changes Vinding-Diers instituted are lower temperatures in fermentation, which have given his wines gorgeous, detailed aromatics as well as notable textural elegance. The medium-bodied 2004 Brunello di Montalcino possesses perfumed layers of sweet ripe fruit that flow gracefully onto the palate, where sweet notes of tobacco, leather and spices come to life, adding further complexity. Finessed tannins round out this beautiful Brunello that is more about elegance rather than sheer power alone. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.

Nice wine. Drank it at the same dinner as 2006 Caymus Special -- and it still came off well. Great with food. 93+ rating

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
