Producer Notes

Manfred Krankl, an Austrian immigrant and Los Angeles restaurateur turned winemaker, is a reclusive and maniacally hard-working proprietor. His back-alley Ventura winery, dubbed the "garage d'or," has been described as "a junkyard (or the first or second level of hell)" and compared to a set from the movie "Mad Max" by Robert Parker. A true believer in radical viticulture, Krankl has worked... More »

Dark purplish black color with an inky thick texture. Amazing bouquet of black berries, dark cherry mixed with chocolate undertones and peppery spices. An initial explosion of fruit on the palate with peppery spices, black olives and meaty flavors taking over. Amazing finish. This wine was great now but will probably get better over the next 5 years.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
