France - Bordeaux - St Julien

Red Bordeaux Blend
Producer Notes

The Second Growth classified estate of Leoville Las Cases continues to produce wines of exceptional quality, rivaling those of the First Growth producers. The wines are full-bodied, concentrated and complex, and have tremendous aging potential. Typical blends consist of over 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, with lesser amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and a small amount of Petit Verdot. Bargain... More »

($45-$50) Good ruby-red. Roasted plum, currant and leather on the nose. Thick, rich and deep, with uncanny sweetness and mouth coverage for this bottling. Finishes very long, with a suggestion of dried fruits and big tannins that are even sweeter than those of the 2005 (the IPT here is 71, vs. 65 in the '05).

Dark crimson. Thick and sweet and brutal. No mellowness or juiciness. Just a bit of a bludgeon. Very drying tannins on the end. The least ready wine so far (though we had not yet tasted the Pauillacs at this point). (Average group score: 15.2)

The 2003 Clos du Marquis possesses higher alcohol (13.4%) than the 2003 grand vin, no doubt because of the higher percentage of Merlot in the final blend. This impressive sleeper of the vintage boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as abundant amounts of fleshy, black cherry and currant fruit interwoven with mocha, vanillin, and spice box. Pure, layered, upfront, and already delicious, it should be drunk over the next 12-15 years.

Very pretty aromas of blackberry, currant and licorice. Full-bodied, with velvety, round tannins and lots of attractive vanilla and berry flavors. Long. 9,500 cases made.

I decanted this bottle for 2 hours before enjoying the blackberry, plum and currant flavors of this beauty. Initially, the nose was closed, but opened nicely to reveal spicebox and lavender along with the signature toasty oak. This will be perfect in another 2 or 3 years and will last for 20.

Full-bodied, still quiet a lot of tannins but drinkable now. Blackberry jam nose, nice fruity taste and slightly sweet with an acidic ending note.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
