France - Bordeaux - St Estephe

Red Bordeaux Blend - Second Growth
Producer Notes

Classified as a Second Growth Bordeaux estate, Chateau Cos d'Estournel is without doubt, one of the top producers in the St. Estephe appellation, producing complex and intense, full-bodied wines. The chateau is often referred to as "super second," meaning that it produces wines at a quality nearing that of the First Growth houses. ($143-$185; IPT of 88) Red-ruby. Knockout nose combines currant, espresso, earth and exotic spices. Wonderfully round and sweet, with outstanding volume and density. A spherical, seamless wine that saturates the entire palate. The huge but lush tannins coat the teeth. This is accessible now but has the sheer material for long aging.

Nuanced and rich and drying. Biscuity and fine but this is just a bit suppressed. Inky. Low key. Fades a bit on the finish. (Average group score: 17)

Two terrific efforts from this vintage, the 2003 Cos dâÂ?Â?Estournel (70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) remains one of the superstars of the vintage. It offers an opaque ruby/purple hue as well as notes of incense, camphor, licorice, creme de cassis and graphite. Full-bodied, opulent, incredibly fresh and well-delineated, it can be consumed now and over the next decade. Kudos to the team at Cos dâÂ?Â?Estournel.

Gorgeous aromas of blackberry, spice and mineral. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a long, long finish. This is first-growth quality. 15,000 cases made.

Great fruit, a little spice and a finish that goes on forever. A very good Bordeaux.

Smoke, burnt rubber, tar and mushroom filled the air in a distinct fashion from it's peers. Black fruits, which were a tad overshadowed by the now rough tannin and chewy texture. Still a bit on the austere side...but isn't this what young Bordeaux is supposed to taste like? Anyhow, the nose and it's CDP qualities must have hooked Bob in as he put this wine in his top 3. Tremendous upside...

Strong youthful nose, some exotic spicy oak. Thick black fruit. Great density, fabulously ripe Cabernet fruit. Sensational. Drink 2016-46.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
