Red Pinot Noir - Grand Cru
Producer Notes

This vineyard near Morey St Denis in the Cote de Nuits produced stellar wines in the 1940s and fully deserved Grand Cru status, yet this was not achieved until 1981. Under owners Roland de Chambure, the Saier family and oenologist Thierry Brouin, the "sleeping beauty" vineyard succeeded in making a comeback after having fallen into disrepair in the 1970s. In 1996 after being sold again, the new... More »

The nose is certainly quite ripe yet clearly pinot-based with a potent mix of red, black and violet aromas that introduce powerful and concentrated flavors that are supple, rich, densely but finely structured and immensely complex, possessing enormous depth and incredible length. The only nit is a touch of warmth but that often comes with the territory in this vintage. A 2003 to buy.

($114) Good full, deep red. Musky, brooding aromas of black raspberry, plum, smoky oak and game; not especially extreme in the context of the vintage. Then thick, dense, chewy and sweet; as superripe, layered and generous as this is, it also retains very good verve and a bit of restraint. Finishes with huge tannins and a whiplash of mocha and roasted herb flavors. This very large-scaled wine really calls for a decade of bottle aging. These 2003s have turned out very well.

Very seductive nose ? concentrated and with some development ? opulent and rich with quite enough acidity and great depth and character. A massive wine with 13.5 per cent but it has everything in balance.

Aged in 75% new oak, the tobacco, blackberry, leather, and tar-scented 2003 Clos des Lambrays is medium to full-bodied, dense, and chewy. Hugely tannic yet concentrated and deep, this is a brooding chocolate, plum, blackberry, spice, smoky mineral, and black raspberry-flavored wine. Uncivilized and firm, it will benefit from cellaring.

An opulent, exotic red. Packed with Asian spices, sweet blackberry and raspberry ganache notes, a swath of dense tannins and new oak for support. Vibrant, and sings now, but needs time to fulfill its potential. Great length.

Colour was deep red with some bricking evident. A fair amount of rim variation, with hints of tawny. The nose was blackcurrant/Ribena with very little earthiness, and the palate was fruit dominated as well, no gamieness or leather as I would have expected. Tannins were soft, finish was quite short and the wine lacked the perfume of comparable Burgundies. Overall a well structured wine, but just lacked the wow factor.

Awesome wine. Pulled this by accident. Definately taste the tobacco and leather...more red fruit than black for both Tins and I. Loved this, but don't touch again until around 2012.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
