Thoroughly ripe, rich and tactile, but with captivating lift to its flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, cassis and flowers.Highly impressive mounting finish saturates the palate with flavor. Already shows great sweetness, but the wine's tight core of fruit suggests it will develop slowly and gracefully in bottle. Boasts a combination of lushness and energy that's rare for California cabernet.

This wine was outclassed, alas. Very dark crimson with a sweet, porty, over the top nose and uncomfortably drying tannins on the finish. I'm sure it would have looked better in a flight of California Cabernets. Glasses seemed to be left unusually full.

One of the world's greatest wines year in and year out is Shafer's Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select. The 2002 was a candidate for perfection the first time I tasted it. The estate keeps this cuvee 32 months in 100% new French oak, so I had a number of chances to see it from barrel. Moreover, I purchased the wine for my own cellar and have had it at least a half dozen times since bottling, and it just gets more profound with each sip. This wine is beyond belief for how it balances its extraordinary richness, purity of personality, and the elegance and finesse of the Stags Leap District with massive cassis fruit, spring flowers, toasty oak and earth. The wine is fabulously concentrated, multidimensional and built like a skyscraper, yet nothing is out of place. The wood, alcohol, acidity and tannin are all in perfect balance. This offering is a tribute to the greatness of Napa Valley, which was recognized by men and women hundreds of years ago, and to the modern day genius of the Shafer family. This 2002 has 50 years of life ahead of it - but why wait!

Very young, rich and extracted, this boasts a dense, powerful presence and tannic core flavors of blackberry, black licorice, cedar, mocha, roasted coffee, loamy earth, vanilla and dried herb. A tour de force of flavor, ending with ripe, muscular tannins.

Slightly grassy when opened but, that faded to baked cherries, dark fruits that carried the tannins well. This wine will age well for a long time but, still drinks well now.

Huge wine but not heavy; nothing out of balance. The finish was endless & at times seemed to pick up strength. The oak was hardly noticeable under all of the fruit. I imagine this could age for many years but I don't know how it could get much better than it is now

It was fantastic - a fruit bomb with a ton of years left in it. Decanted and got better and better.

This has all the makings of a great Cabernet. A bouquet of casis and very dark licorice like flavors on the palate. I last tasted this wine in 2007 and now feel as though it is closing down slightly. Wait two years and try again.

After a tasting of the 1995 Hillside at Shafer, I had to put Hillside on my list of wines to get and this one far exceeded the 95 that I had! I was looking for flaws with it and couldn't really find any. Dark Purple in color the nose is incredible with lots of black fruit. Blackcurrant, blackberry, vanilla and chocolate are very noticeable. The alcohol is 14.5% but you couldn't tell from the taste, there is no heat to this wine at all, it's very well balanced. The mouth feel is very smooth with silky tannins. I timed the finish at well over one minute. I wonder if there's enough acidity for long term aging but what the hey, I doubt I will be able to keep my hands off my second bottle for more than a few years...

A huge let down after the 01?s performance from barrel last year. Muddy aromas with some ripe plum and light chocolate peaking through the murk. A low acid wine framed by plenty of oak. Very fine but nowhere near the 2001 (which remains one of the best wines I have ever tasted from barrel).
