Issue Issue 120

Good full ruby-red. Superripe aromas of sweet, sappy berries; not roasted. Lush, sweet and sappy, with compelling freshness and depth of sappy fruit. This has terrific early appeal as well as a firm structure to support further development in bottle. Finishes with big, chewy, tongue-dusting tannins and superb lingering sweetness of dark berry fruit. The best Maiden vintage yet.

Drink Dates 2005-2020

Sweet, deep black currant fruit, espresso, licorice, graphite, and earth aromas emerge from the dense, ruby/purple-colored 2002 The Maiden, which cascades over the palate without a hard edge. Like its bigger sibling, it's impossible to resist at present, but promises to age well for 15 years.

Very rich and concentrated, racy at points, with dried currant, loamy earth and savory dried herb notes. Drying on the finish, yet the flavors run deep and persistent.

Decanted for 8 hours, this is one of the best wines of the vintage, a deep ruby red color, huge nose of blackberries and cassis, huge well integrated tannins with a long spectacular finish. This was one of 22 bottles consumed at an amazing wine dinner with buddies of mine. This was one of the wines of the evening up against some really great bottles.

Could be aged for 8 more years. Took about 30 minutes to open up and after it did was perfect. Great on this Valentine's day.

This is one of the best CA cabs we have had in a decade; lots of cassis and blackberry on first taste; a long finish with lots of complexity; delicious now but will be good for another 5 years at least.

Not much different from the Harlin of the same year, but much less expensive. Deep color and flavor with earthy loamy taste, velvety tannin and long finish.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
