Red Zinfandel
Producer Notes

The emergence of Williams Selyem as one of California's Pinot Noir leaders is an improbable success story. Founders Burt Williams and Ed Selyem started making wine under the Hacienda del Rio Winery label in a garage in Fulton. Their first wine was a 1981 Zinfandel, but very soon after they began their quest for great Pinot Noir. By the late 1980s, Williams had retired as a typesetter and Selyem... More »

Noted for their Pinot, W&S Zins take no back to any. The Forchini 2002 was drinking amazingly well. Big fruit with rasberry/cherry/strawberry flavors with solid oak structure. Not overly alcoholic and very fruit friendly. I wish I had more of this star! Clearly will age well.

Deeply hued with thick moderately pigmented legs. A classic big Zinfandel nose of wild berries (strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry), raw sugar, maple syrup, some briar, cherries jubilee, and a touch of vanilla with gamy overtones. Excellent acidity with a lengthy finish. Big Zins can often be tiring but this wine remains fairly light on its feet due to its acidity. A bit of a burn comes through on the back of the fruit as the wine ends.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
