Red Cabernet Sauvignon
Producer Notes

Silver Oak was founded in the early 1970s by Ray Duncan and Justin Meyer, a former winemaker with Christian Brothers. The founders' goal was to create exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon that would be distinguished by its elegance and finesse. In most years, the wines are made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from the Alexander and Napa Valleys. The developing wine is aged 30 months in... More »

($100) Bright red-ruby. Pungent resiny oak along with currant, dark chocolate and herbs on the nose. Offers a supple texture, but today the fairly intense flavors of cassis, chocolate and mint are squashed under their heavy load of oak, which also dries the finish.

Not surprisingly, my favorite Napa bottling is the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and a dollop of Petit Verdot. Aromas of olive-tinged, creme de cassis intermixed with sweet vanillin and smoky oak lead to a sweet, chunky, ripe, cedary wine with an attractive texture, an expansive, fruit-forward style, and a spicy finish. It should drink well for 10-12 years.

A plush display of oak and ripe fruit, with the signature vanilla bean oak joining currant and plum fruit flavors that are ripe and intense, yet supple. Well-balanced, with good depth, focus and concentration. 33,000 cases made.

Christmas Day with the Pittengers! We had the Mandavi Oakville 2004 and 2006, the Silver Oak Napa 2002 and the 6-8-9 2009. The 6-8-9 was our starter wine in the afternoon, for dinner the Silver Oak was first and the Mondavi's followed. All came out great, the 6-8-9 a little light and very fruit forward. The Silver Oak was on the decline but had nice fruit and color, the oak component was suttle, very soft and went down EASY!. The Mondavi's were harder to taste but they still had oak and life in them for aging. Not as nice to drink but still enjoyable.

Well rounded Cabernet Sauvignon standard. 9 years old and the tannins have helped this cab age beautifully. Drink these 2001's and 2002's now. Rich notes of chocolate, tobacco, and a touch of white pepper. Nice finish.

Decanted for 3 hours and brought wine up to room temperature. A beautiful bouquet of blueberries and blackberries. Smooth, buttery, luxurious on the uptake with well-rounded tannins and a finish that will make you yearn for more.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
