This too is very opulent with a richness and breadth of aromas that is dazzling in their sheer range. Big, powerful, very masculine and exceptionally intense flavors blessed with huge extract but despite the size and weight, this also has the best acid/fruit balance of any of these 1ers plus this absolutely coats and stains the palate. In fact, there is an interesting textural quality by virtue of all the sap yet the finish is quite dry. A great effort that explodes on the backend and lingers for minutes.

Musky aromas of chicken broth, lime and crushed stone; quite austere and slow to open. Then less fruity but more important on the palate, with bracing flavors of lemon and apple and an impression of minerality I can only describe as creamy. A very rich, dense wine with a strength of material that belies the normal-for-Raveneau yield of about 50 hectoliters per hectare.

Slate, chalk, and ripe pears can be discerned in the aromatic profile of the 2002 Chablis Montee de Tonnerre. Fleshy, supple and packed with creamed nuts, candied citrus fruits, and flint, this is a medium-bodied wine with outstanding depth as well as a sensual, velvety texture. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2010. "2002 was the kind of vintage we'd love to see every year, it has excellent balance and loads of flesh," said Bernard Raveneau. Harvest for the Raveneaus began the last week of September, and the grapes were "healthy, with between 4 and 4.5 grams of acidity (per liter), and ripe, there was no need to chaptalize." The estate's wines will be bottled in April and May, 2004. I have never tasted a line-up of Chablis with the sensual textures and stunning terroir-driven flavor profiles exhibited by Domaine Raveneau's 2002s. These are magnificent wines that I would do almost anything to own, age, and drink... Bravo!

A hint of oxidation when opened but splendid in 10 minutes. A wonderful Chablis with a long finish
