Red Pinot Noir
Producer Notes

One of the most influential mavens of modern California winemaking, Helen Turley creates in Marcassin wines that are among the most sought-after in California. Though the wines are made following a traditionalist Burgundian style, they are unique, complex representations of California Pinot and Chardonnay. Turley's straightforward winemaking philosophy is, "...great vineyards, meticulously... More »

A menthol and cherry cough syrup nose leads to mocha, plum, orange peel and chocolate-infused flavors that are big, dramatic and robust but not especially well-balanced as here the finish also stops rather abruptly. Not for me.

Full, bright red-ruby. Knockout nose of raspberry, flint, spices, licorice and mocha; higher-pitched than the Blue Slide. Then big, broad, spicy and uncompromisingly dry; a voluptuously round, large-scaled pinot that's not yet as flamboyant as the Blue Slide. The most tannic of these 2002 pinots, but the tannins are outlasted by powerful, spicy fruit and mineral flavors. These wines have the texture and weight-not to mention complexity-of grand cru Burgundy

The profound 2002 Pinot Noir Marcassin Estate always reminds me of a top-notch Clos de la Roche from a domaine such as Ponsot. Notes of fresh mushrooms, forest floor, plums, black cherries, raspberries, and hints of white chocolate and smoke jump form the glass of this full-bodied wine. Its extraordinary nuances, amazingly complex, rich, broad palate, and spectacular finish suggest it should drink well for well over a decade.

Fresh and lively, with blackberry, wild berry and light toasty oak aromas folded in with scents of earthy forest floor. This is intense on the palate without being heavy, finishing with a pretty burst of ripe boysenberry. Has exquisite balance and a long, lingering finish. 450 cases made.

wine is cloudy due to transportation. Given the handicap, it showed very well. Delicious and match really well with mushroom dish.

Soaring aromatics of dried porcini mushroom, earth & spices. Full bodied- almost came across as tannic. I loved the acidity in this wine. More earthy than fruity, but it did not seem in any danger of fading even at 11 years old. The finish was more than 45 seconds. Very impressive bottle.

An intensely colored Pinot Noir, w/ heady sweet notes of kirsch liqueur, toffee, strawberry jam and rhubarb pie. While very ripe and pushing its intensity to the max, there is a tantalizing underbrush streak and decent juxtaposed acidity that keeps things in symmetry. Certainly stemmed from Zinfandel sensibilities, but harnessed enough to pull it off

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
