($85) Full red. Raspberry and floral high notes with lower tones of earth and underbrush. Smooth and silky in the mouth, with the raspberry and floral flavors dominating. Less obviously sweet today than the Estournelles but this is wonderfully suave wine, with an exhilarating weightlessness on the back end. The very long finish is dominated by tangy raspberry. (In contrast to my superb pair of Gevrey premier crus, my sample of the Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin was too advanced, and my Mazis-Chambertin was corked.)

Bright crimson. Much more diffuse than the Cazetiers on the nose but on the palate still a baby with its constituent parts of acidity and tannin still very separate unresolved. It seems to have potential though. (cask sample)

The black cherry, spice, pepper, and rose-scented 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques does not require any assistance. Big, lush, energetic, and elegant, its medium to full-bodied personality coats the taster's palate with a myriad of spicy black fruits. Majestically ripe cherries, blackberries, roasting spices, and stones can be found in its complex flavor profile as well as in its long, sweet, supple finish.

Pure black cherry and violet aromas and flavors mark this opulent, forward red. It shows class, but also terroir, in a seductive, modern presentation. Mouthcoating, ripe tannins and lingering sweet fruit on the finish.

(w/Clive Coates)Med.-dark ruby w/minimal sediment; lovely nose of black fruit & spice; full, rich and well-structured; elegant & complex; still firm tannins; classy & long; still not mature despite 2 hours of airing after decanting. Excellent and even better than the Jadot Mazis-Chambertin we had with it.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
