2001 Kongsgaard - Syrah Hudson Vineyard Syrah - USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley - Red

USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley

Red Syrah
Producer Notes

Fifth-generation Napa natives John and Maggy Kongsgaard produce The Judge, Chardonnay, VioRous, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Low yielding vineyards and traditional low-intervention winemaking techniques produce powerful, graceful wines which are high intensity expressions of vineyard and variety.

The core of their endeavor is the ten-acre vineyard they planted in the late 1970s on a... More »

($125; always from the same 2.3-acre parcel within Hudson Vineyard) Saturated ruby. Knockout Northern Rhone-like aromas of raspberry, bacon fat, minerals, cocoa powder, pepper and licorice. Superconcentrated, saline and distinctly dry, with flavors of berry liqueur, dark chocolate and licorice. Almost painfully intense and a bit clenched today. But this expanded impressively with extended time in the open bottle. In its flavors, texture and structure, this is midway between Cote-Rotie and Hermitage.

The 2001 Syrah may be the finest yet produced by Kongsgaard. It is a dead ringer for a more exotic version of Chapoutier's great Le Pavillon (from 80+ year old vines planted in granite soils on the Hermitage Hill). Aromas of white chocolate, ground pepper, blackberries, cassis liqueur, and flowers (lilacs?) is followed by a wine of great density, a certain exoticism, and powerful, thick, huge flavors oozing with extract, glycerin, and personality. There is also considerable tannin as well as decent acidity. This is about as close to a northern Rhone as Kongsgaard Syrahs get. Look for this 2001 to tighten up considerably, and be at its finest between 2007-2020.

I have not had this young, so I do not have context as to how this wine has aged, but I ws NOT looking for a huge fruit bomb and happily that is NOT what I got. However, I do not think this will get that much better if at all. Color: Showing mature maroon edges, a dark red core, when swirled the mature red really shows Nose: Tar, roast beef, bacon fat, spice, currants, tobacco, this was good to go after being open 30 minutes. Palate: Fine to medium grain tannins, juicy and full textures, decently long finish, 30+ seconds.

started out overly jammy and tannic out of the bottle but opened up beautifully w/ good balance and dark fruit overtones.

Powerful and concentrated with excellent depth. Well-defined crystalline dark fruit and game flavors. Forward right now despite its strength. A phenomenal Syrah ? if only it were priced a little less dear. Sadly that is not going to happen given that the price for the 2003 Syrah increased to $150 per bottle. The wine is minimally handled (only two rackings) and ages for two years in 50% new oak before being bottled without fining or filtration. The wine comes from the Q Block of Hudson Vineyard.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
