France - Bordeaux - St Estephe

Red Bordeaux Blend - Second Growth
Producer Notes

Classified as a Second Growth Bordeaux estate, Chateau Cos d'Estournel is without doubt, one of the top producers in the St. Estephe appellation, producing complex and intense, full-bodied wines. The chateau is often referred to as "super second," meaning that it produces wines at a quality nearing that of the First Growth houses. ($64-$100) Bright ruby-red. Vibrant, complex aromas of cassis, graphite, eucalyptus and tobacco. Fat and sweet but shapely, with impressive density and underlying structure. Flavors of plum, mint, roasted nuts and sweet oak. Fairly full for young Cos, but quite suave. Finishes with firm but smooth tannins and excellent grip. Better than the 2000.

Dark crimson. Polished, exotic nose. Sweet and rich and SO unlike Montrose, it’s almost a joke! But it’s much more attractive and juicier than Montrose… real life here. Polish without excess sweetness.

A beautiful effort, the 2001 Cos d'Estournel (65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot) exhibits a poised, noble bouquet of black currants, cedar, spice box, and licorice. A hint of truffles emerges as it sits in the glass. Medium-bodied with sweet fruit (mostly black) and nicely integrated wood, it builds incrementally in the mouth, ending with a 50-second finish. Drink this stylish, restrained yet substantial claret over the next 15+ years.

Wonderful spice and currant aromas to this young wine. Full-bodied, with super well-integrated, refined tannins. Long caressing finish. This is very, very silky. Just like from barrel. Cos is on top of it now. 17,705 cases made.

One of the best 2001 Cos d'Estournel I have tasted. It is absolutely mature, no tanin and suberb. Enjoy!

Seems to be hitting its peak. Well balanced, smooth tannins, drinking beautifully. Classical Cos, just as it should be...

Delicious. Dark purple color followed by aromas of blueberry on the nose. Dark ripe fruit on the palate with cedar. Long finish. This is evolving nicely, and resembles Pavie.

Stewed cherry, hot, a ton of acid, and some vegetal qualities. This wine is balanced at a very high decibel level.

Bold, fruity and assertive; bridges the gap between Old World and New World styles. Should please fans of both. Big bouquet right out of the bottle. Dark purple core, medium weight on the palate, with orange peel and currant on the 30-second finish. A joy to drink. Ready now, should provide pleasure for at least another decade. Best bottle of Cos I've had yet.

Excellent wine. Good spice and fruit, long finish. Big, full-bodied wine with a lot of class. Great value compared to some of its peers.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
