Drink Dates 2010-2018

Medium black cherry red colored wine with a few thick slightly pigmented legs. Initially quite closed, with airing the wine reveals reasonably attractive slightly funky aromas of beef blood, cinnamon, sandalwood, heat, licorice, strawberry, and light spice. Smooth but light flavors echo the nose but are primarily strawberry and leather. Moderate plus tannin with slightly elevated acidity. Finishes with average length and simple red fruit flavor. Needs time but I doubt the 2001 Rayas will ever live up to its well-deserved reputation.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
