Red Cabernet Sauvignon
Producer Notes

The mission statement reads, in part, "To produce organically grown fruit and with this fruit make a singular wine of the highest caliber and distinction." By all accounts, Bart and Daphne Araujo are succeeding magnificently. The flagship wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon from their own Eisele Vineyards, is hailed by critics and desired by consumers in every vintage. Though first planted to Zinfandel... More »

($185; contains 4% cabernet franc) Ruby-red. Warm and inviting aromas of plum, mocha, tobacco, smoke and spices. Rich, silky and suave, with mellow, claret-like flavors of currant, plum, tobacco and mocha. Pure, layered and stylish wine, finishing with substantial but lush tannins and subtle persistence. One can see the hand of consulting enologist Michel Rolland in this wine.

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard was produced from the largest crop of this glorious trilogy (1,700 cases from a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc). Its saturated purple color leads to a restrained but impressive nose of cassis, toast, earth, and a hint of cedar. Full-bodied and multi-layered, with impeccable balance and a noteworthy juxtaposition of power and elegance, it is starting to close down ever so slightly and seems more masculine when compared to the 2002 and 2003.

Intense aromas of blackberries and dark chocolate, with hints of minerals. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, long finish. This needs time. Beauty.

A wine to be drinking when they come to take you away. Still remarkably young and full of both power and grace. Toast, prune, crushed rock, blackberry, casis, and some very delicate spring flower notes. Deep purple, well delinieated. Superb.

Way over-rated. Good, complex, and not a fruit bomb but please, not a 99! Too tart, and brief with fading fruit. No way this will last 25 yrs more.

Classic Eisele Vineyard wine. Ageless. Unique fruit with coffee, tobacco, leather nuances. Very sophisticated and special. Takes a while to open up - suggest decanting.

Phenomenal! A show stopper of a wine with earthy notes as well as a metallic twinge on the mid palate. 20 second finish leaves you waiting for the next sip. A great effort, from an excellent vintage.

I'm not happy about the egregious price increase (up $35 a bottle compared to the 2000) but the quality of this wine is exceptional and likely is the best Araujo Cabernet Sauvignon yet fashioned (at a minimum the best since 1996). Deeply colored with lots of thin moderately pigmented legs. Complex ever changing aromas of milk, baker?s chocolate, ripe almost syrupy cherries, milk chocolate brownies, blackberry, a touch of blueberry, and just a hint of minerals. Thick and fairly heavy tannins but they are so smooth and velvety one barely notices them. Intense flavors coat the palate and last for over a minute. Surprisingly good acidity despite the wine?s incredibly deep fruit. A wine so good that you don'twant to share. Powerful yet ethereal ? what every wine strives for but so few achieve. Very forward. After receiving a cold soak and extended maceration, the wine was raised in 100% new French oak for 22 months. 96% Cabernet and 4% Franc.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
