2001 Lynch-Bages Bordeaux Blend - France - Bordeaux - Pauillac - Red - Fifth Growth

Red Bordeaux Blend - Fifth Growth
Producer Notes

Located just outside the town of Pauillac, Chateau Lynch Bages is famous for its Cabernet-based wines, which typify the best of the appellation. The estate is classified as one of eighteen Fifth Growths from the official 1855 classification; many experts, though, would argue that its quality merits it a place among the Second Growths. Typical Lynch-Bages reveals a wonderful bouquet, rich tannins,... More »

Issue Issue 10098

(78% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 3.76 pH; 5.08 g/l total acidity; 58 IPT; 13.3% alcohol): Deep ruby-red. Closed nose hints at blackcurrant, dark plum, smoke and dried herbs. Juicy and dense on entry, then bright and lively in the middle, thanks to vibrant acidity lifting the flavors of underbrush, earth and dark plum. Finishes with a hint of cola, a slightly weedy note, and mounting, drying tannins. I was a little disappointed by this wine; maybe I caught it in at an awkward time, as there didn't seem to be anything wrong with the bottle itself--or the cork.

Mid crimson. Sweet, spicy and lifted. Juicy. Transparent. Very easy to like. A bit chewy on the end. A very solid performance. Looking good!

Issue 196

The fully mature 2001 exhibits aromas of tapenade, bay leaf, licorice, red and black currants, damp earth and new saddle leather. Medium-bodied and atypically elegant and charming for a Lynch Bages with soft, fully resolved tannin and a moderately long finish, it is much lighter than a great vintage such as 2000.

Nose was classic earthy Bordeaux. Palate was typical Bordeaux but with occasional bursts of Napa type dark fruit that would quickly disappear. Rich with chocolate/coffee undertones. Interesting wine but lacked the depth and complexity of a stronger vintage. 92 pts.

Deep ruby red colored wine with a slightly gamy nose of toasty oak and spice. Nice oak and plum flavors on the palate. Reasonably plush but lacks the hedonistic qualities of the best Lynch Bages. Reminds of the 1978 Lynch. 73% Cabernet, 15% Merlot, 10% Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
