Bottled in July of 2003, this wine showed very well despite the vintage?s lackluster reputation following the much heralded 2000. Black maroon colored wine with significant lightening at the rim and lots of thin pigmented legs. A light but intense nose of sweet fruit, vanilla oak, and cr?me brul?e. Delicious right now with plenty of sweet plumy fruit. Beautifully balanced with excellent length ending with caramel and charred wood. A Latour that will be accessible relatively early in its life. Engerer claims the wine reminds him of the 1988 but riper. I'm a little more optimistic than that. This one of the few 2001s that I would like in my personal cellar.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
