2001 Joseph Phelps - Insignia Bordeaux Blend - USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley - Red

USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley

Red Bordeaux Blend
Producer Notes

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.

"A triumph. Aged nearly two years in all-new French oak, this massive wine stuns with its superb balance. Manages the elusive challenge of reining in hugely ripe black currant, cherry and oak flavors and sweet tannins while keeping the palate impression soft and alluring, almost feminine. Just gorgeous right out of the bottle, but should develop effortlessly through the decade and beyond." 96 Points

Opened two hours prior to drinking, but not decanted. Bright, clear ruby color with a hint of orange / brown at the rim. Nose of flowers and red berries; prominent floral tones likely driven by the Petit Verdot in this wine (9% I think). On the palate, medium-plus flavors of red berries and some spice, though flavors still primary. I thought this wine to be "light on its feet"; an elegant, rather than overpowering wine (especially when compared to another wine tasted alongside - a 100% Napa Cabernet). Very well-balanced wine; matched well with a short-rib dinner! Still some time left for this wine, but don't think it will get any better.

This was big, full-bodied and juicy with well integrated tannins and acidity. Without a doubt, it's an easy-drinking, polished wine of great presence, but lacked soul and complexity. Still, I can understand why some people might like this. As for myself, in this category I think Caymus Special Selection, Rudd Jericho Canyon or Ridge Monte Bello would be a better value. Drink now through 2016.

Celebrated my parents 50th anniversary with this nice bottle. Good color and body, soft from the beginning and got even better. Nice berry and other fruit flavors from start to middle ending with a suttle oak finish. The finish was nice, not that long but delicious!

Very nice wine. Great nose and really nice flavors. A little weak on the finish. I love Insignia and this one doesn't disappoint.

Strong cassis notes with clear cedar underneath. Tannins are well integrated right now. Open up and enjoy, or wait a few years to see how it fleshes out.

Solid ruby color all the way to the rim. Somewhat muted nose of delicate cherries and raspberry. Plush mouth feel with red fruits of every kind and leather. Medium weight. Smooth finish with no excess alchol and fine tannins.

Great deep color. Great smell of both cab fruit and earth but admittedly weak. Slightly dry but works very well with food. The fruit is showing very well but not overpowering. Slight taste of glycerin. Alcohol is well integrated and the wine is well integrated on the palate. Adele even commented on the richness of the wine. Very good.

As reported in Oeno-File Volume 2 Issue 1, the 2001 Insignia was very impressive from barrel. From bottle (in this case a magnum), this wine still meets my raised expectations. A brilliant deeply hued black cherry with lots of thick moderately pigmented legs. A bright very full nose of sweet amorphous fruit, candied plum, light spice, soy, oak, and Oreo cookies. Gorgeous sweet fruit and chocolaty oak flavors. Considerable length that ends with sweet buttery oak and red and dark fruits. Everything is big about this wine but everything is still balanced. 89% Cabernet, 8% Petit Verdot, and 3% Malbec (for the first time ever the Insignia does not contain any Merlot). Bottled after being aged in 100% new French oak for 22 months. Drink (for the sheer hedonism of it) now, but best to wait until 2008 to 2017 to consume.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
