A firm but very approachable wine. Tannins are present and almost silky/ subtle and wine has a dark berry, chocolate/espresso finish that lasts. Drank over 4 hours and was great to the end

Sperss is a thirty-acre vineyard in the Serralunga commune of Barolo. It consists of 94% Nebbiolo and 6% Barbera. It was fermented in stainless steel prior to spending one year in barrique and an additional year in large oak casks. The 2001 is a deep ruby with thin lightly colored legs. Full of powerful scents but with such great dexterity that it haunts more than bludgeons you. Concentrated but still reserved aromas of milk, a bit of espresso, sweet black cherries, mint, vanilla, and some chocolate. Lots of incredibly controlled but powerful fruit nicely cabined with very fine acidity. Tannins are firm but not intrusive due to their silky texture and the wine?s wealth of flavor. I bought this wine for my personal cellar.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
