2000 Joseph Phelps - Insignia Bordeaux Blend - USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley - Red

USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley

Red Bordeaux Blend
Producer Notes

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.

Last of the 2000. Sorry that it's gone. Always consistantly good.

1/11 Great balance but, still lots of tannin with sufficient fruit to continue to mature.

Notes of raspberry and blackberry jam along with hints of violets. This inky purple full bodied beauty is a mouthful of fruit that lasts for a minute. Well integrated tannins make this wine a soft and voluptuous baby that is just coming into its own. This should drink nicely for another 10 years.

This one not as good as last month. Seems much older and past it's prime. Still a nice bottle but wouldn't buy one today at current market value.

My second bottle of the 2000 was really excellent. Smooth, balanced, no aggressive tannins. I'm always amazed that, even as the blend changes each year, Insignia is always identifiably distinctive. I guess that is what terroir means...

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
