Issue Issue 108

($60) Medium ruby. Roasted red and black fruits and a meaty nuance on the nose. Sweet, fat and very ripe; seems more Pomerol in style than St. Emilion. Finishes with full, ripe tannins. "A bon-bon, not an intellectual wine," says proprietor Stephan von Neipperg.

Very, very deep colour, almost black. Oddly light nose with a hint of sawdust and pickle which is a bit worrying. Very thick and extracted and drying towards the finish. Lack of real fruity core. Just colour and mass really.

Drink Dates 2006-2019

This is one of St-Emilion's foothill (pieds de cotes) vineyards planted with 90% Merlot and equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vinification is classic Stephan von Neipperg and Stephane Derenoncourt. Undoubtedly the finest effort this property has yet produced, the black-colored 2000 offers up sexy notes of espresso, chocolate, Asian spices, black cherry liqueur, and blackberries. Opulent, chewy, and powerful, this deep, full-bodied wine has layers of ripe fruit, huge power, yet a classic, well-delineated style. A brilliant wine.

Subtle, yet rich. Refined, yet powerful. Full-bodied, with super silky tannins, yet it's elegant and caressing. Joy to taste. Fantastic l'Oratoire. From the same people who bring you La Mondotte and Canon-La Gaffelière. 3,750 cases made.

Very good wine. Probably faded a bit out of the bottle, and likely decanted too long. Would say best within the first 30/60 minutes open. Smooth, subtle and drinking well.

A big powerful wine, still a lot of tannins. Good fruit, but needs to soften up. This could have done with another 5 years, amazing !

Inky color with blackberries and brambles on the nose. Rich taste of black fruit and smoke with a brief funky note on the finish. Can certainly taste the cab franc in this one. Served this with a beef tenderloin with Madeira sauce and that didn't help the wine. I liked the wine better the next day and would pair it with a lamb dish.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
