Producer Notes

Founded in 1977 by Lidia and Pin Rivetti, La Spinetta has grown from a small Piedmont producer of Moscato into a extensive operation which now also crafts Barbera, Barbaresco, and Barolo. Popped and poured over dinner last night. Lovely floral nose right out of the gate with a hint of licorice. Medium bodied Barolo with a distinct dark-cherry mid-palate and a silky finish that lasted 30 or so seconds. The tannins have softened substantially since I last tasted this wine 2 or so years ago. Terrific young Barolo.

Very well balanced Barolo. Spice, red fruits, slight floral notes. Popped and poured and it showed very well. Nice structure with good acidity to suggest this well age well. 2 of us polished off a bottle in no time. 50+8+8+18+9=93

La Spinetta is one of if not the best of the new wave Northern Italian producers. The 2000 is their first foray in to Barolo and it is an extremely impressive debut. Fashioned from 30 year old vines, this brilliant medium garnet colored wine has thick slightly pigmented legs. Undeveloped but attractive aromas of spice, slightly caramelized cherries, saddle leather, and vanilla tinged oak. All crushed velvet on the palate with loads of sweet supple tannins, perfect acidity, and a finish that lasts and lasts. Way too easy to guzzle right now. An unusually fine and hedonistic Barolo. I bought a case for personal consumption.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
