This stuff is drinking great now. The Shafer Merlot is always very approachable -- lots of fruit, silky, integrated tannins, and easy to drink young. But, at this point, the 2000 has developed some nice added complexity. The tobacco and earth really show through now while lacking in the younger versions (which, while good, often strike me as a little clinical). Would love to see them pull this off w/ less alcohol, though. Anyway, this wine should be over the hill, but I think it's in great shape.

Drink Dates 2009

All fruit early followed by powerful spice and a very long tannin finish; high alcohol content. There seemed to be some mint/herb and tobacco/chocolate in there as well but it was subtle. Enjoyable full bodied California Merlot.
