Bright ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of cassis, violet, bitter chocolate and licorice. Tightly wound, intensely flavored and on the lean side, with extremely primary flavors of cassis and dark chocolate. Not showing its flesh today, but this has good underlying density and pliancy. Finishes with toothdusting, fine tannins.

Bright crimson with pale rim. Quite open nose, with a hint of Oxo meat extract. Lots of acidity and a very dry wine. A little austere on the front palate. Doesn’t carry on magnificently although on first pouring it has good density. Dances and prances rather than steps in a stately manner. Dry finish. Tastes much more like off-cuts than the self confident Forts de Latour that has its own personality.

A brilliant second wine, the 2000 Carruades de Lafite (51.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42.3% Merlot, 4.9% Cabernet Franc, and 1.4% Petit Verdot), aged in 10-15% new French oak, shows wonderfully sweet lead pencil shavings intermixed with an elegant black cherry and cassis nose. A wine of tremendous purity, medium body, and the tell-tale Lafite elegance, this is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next 12-15 years.

Wonderfully ripe and decadent, with tobacco, meat and ripe berry aromas, with hints of currants. Full-bodied, and very velvety, with unctuous fruit flavors. Long and exotic aftertaste. Terrific wine. Second wine of Lafite Rothschild. 2,375 cases made.

Drinking very nicely. The acids are mellowing and the flavor layers are coming out a bit. Not worth the price but very nice wine.

Very characteristic Pauillac, well-made, but without the finish or polish to rate more than a score in the very low 90's. Still has bright fruit and lots of sweet tannins, so no rush to drink it yet if it's in the cellar, but wouldn't run out and buy some at the current retail price.

Deep purple hue with crimson rim. Smeels like beef jerkey and leather with deep fruit essence. Beautiful integration on the palate. Deep rich fruit really comes through while maintaining that old world charm. Will likely develop the earthy components a bit more over time, this wine is a solid effort. Tannins could use some age as well but they're not intruding on the quality right now. Full bodied (for Bordeaux) with a great finish that never "cheapens" out. Solid effort. Not quite as velvety as a Cal cab but considering the age, it may get there.
