2000 Gruaud Larose Bordeaux Blend - France - Bordeaux - St Julien - Red - Second Growth

France - Bordeaux - St Julien

Red Bordeaux Blend - Second Growth
Producer Notes

The phrase "The King of Wines..." adorns its label, but this isn't Bordeaux Budweiser. In fact, St. Julien's Second-Growth-classified Chateau Gruaud Larose was known as "the wine of kings" back in the late 1700s and continues this legacy today. The most notable recent example is President Chirac serving 1990 Gruaud Larose to President Clinton at Parisian bistro L'Ami Louis in June, 1999. ... More »

although it opens really nice after 2 hrs it stills somehow mut and needing of more time in bottle. Try it in 2015...but is has the structure and fruit to rise into a classic Larose!

This may need some more time to fully develop. The fruit and cassis flavors are masking the tannins pretty well at this point.

Really needs time to open up. Was very tight at first. Black impenetrable fruit. Opened up to Brett smells, cedar, aging bordeaux smells. Really improves with air, so my range takes into account what this could be in another 5 to 10 years.

Had this bottle open for 4 nights. Dark purple with no browning even after 4 nights. Right after opening the bouquet was of damp earth; after an hour it revealed tobacco and tea aromas. The 2nd night was the most aromatic with flavors of currant and a sweet flavor that I could not quite identify (menthol, anise?). The 3rd night the bouquet actually seemed sweeter; the bouquet and flavors were dissipating, but the structure was still intact with no signs of oxidation.

Great nose, but the taste was a little thin. Maybe it got cooked over the past decade?

This wine reminds of the 1986 GL at this stage but perhaps lacks some of the steely resolve of that wine (which still has not come close to maturity). Clean aromatics of herbs and dark fruits. Tons of tannin, concentration, and acidity in the mouth.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
