2000 Canon la Gaffeliere Bordeaux Blend - France - Bordeaux - St Emilion - Red - Grand Cru Classe

France - Bordeaux - St Emilion

Red Bordeaux Blend - Grand Cru Classe
Producer Notes

A Grand Cru Classe, Chateau Canon-La-Gaffeliere is located in the center of the St. Emilion appellation. Thanks to its location, it gets the climate of both St.Emilion and Pomerol, which means that it is more continental than the maritime Medoc. The name of the vineyard derives from the medieval word for "leper" which reflects the leprosarium that was located there during the 14th century. After... More »

Issue Issue 108

($90-$125) Moderately saturated ruby-red. Knockout superripe nose combines red- and blackcurrant, mocha, smoked meat and chocolatey torrefaction. Sweet and dense, but also lively and penetrating, with superb freshness of fruit for the vintage; showing little sign of its 13.5% alcohol. Pliant flavors of cherry, spice, tobacco and flowers. Finishes impressively long, with very fine tannins. Owner von Neipperg noted that most of the cabernet franc here was planted prior to 1953; a good bit of merlot was planted in 1969, with more going in in 1986.

Some brightness in the ruby. Quite a youthful, 'pointed', sharp nose without much development yet. Rich and sweet and with more than a hint of dark chocolate, this leaps up and down for attention. The acid and tannin are still a little jagged, in modern idiom. Very savoury finish. Firm and still on the way up.

This is a triumphant 2000, flamboyant, super-concentrated, yet classic in proportions. Lavish notes of roasted espresso, melted chocolate, creme de cassis, toasty new oak, and Asian spices jump from the glass of this sensationally perfumed, rather ostentatious 2000. It is enormously concentrated and pure, with low acidity and exquisite balance. Remarkably, in spite of its large size, viscosity, and opulence, it is fresh and delineated. Potentially the finest Canon-la-Gaffeliere made to date.

This is very jammy and delicious. Very ripe berry aromas, with hints of roses. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a medium, caressing finish. Refined and caressing. A love it. Close to the 1998 in quality. 5,415 cases made.

This very darkly colored wine is raised in 90-100% new French oak each vintage. A tight clean nose. A touch liquide with hard tannins. Not as much of an effusive fruit blockbuster as in prior vintages.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
