USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley

Red Proprietary Blend
Producer Notes

Opus One Winery was founded in 1979 as a joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Here is the best Opus since the sexy 1998. As soon as it hits the glass, it exudes marvelous color. Aromas of black fruits abound in the nose surrounded by oak perfume. Attractive, smooth and approachable on the palate, with lots of bright black fruit, good structure.

Lots of barnyard on the nose. The wine was just okay. It could have used more time. Tannins were still too powerful.

Overall, not what you would expect from Opus One. With that said, it still showed some life with some firm tannins, and a 30 second finish. No need to hold on to for any longer.

Full bodied. Smooth texture. Satin-like texture. Medium finish.

I really wanted to like this wine what with the resources behind the venture. A disapointment, tasting like a aged Franciscan or other mid packer. The nose was weak Napa with some semblance of leather and pencil lead, really struggling to either break out, or more likely hold on for its life...at 9 years old. It washed out quickly with bruised fruit and just a weak delivery of flavor. The finish was more like London Broil than Dry Aged Rib eye, well below expectation. Boo Hoo

Nose was a bit stale, but the wine opened up and was outstanding--cherry, oak, and smoke.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
