Red Bordeaux Blend - Fifth Growth
Producer Notes

Located just outside the town of Pauillac, Chateau Lynch Bages is famous for its Cabernet-based wines, which typify the best of the appellation. The estate is classified as one of eighteen Fifth Growths from the official 1855 classification; many experts, though, would argue that its quality merits it a place among the Second Growths. One of the best wines I've have ever experienced, if not the best. So balanced and smooth. Dark fruit and oh such a seamless and long finish!!

I was surprised how young and unevolved this bottle seemed based on other reviews. Dominated by oak on the nose and palate with just a hint of clove and spice upon opening. It took a good 6 hours of air for the oak to calm down. Plenty of fruit left so I am hoping this will balance out. I'll try another bottle in 5 years or so. 93 pts. Probably 95 or 96 pts 24 hours later based on one remaining glass that finally smoothed out. Should be really nice in 5-10 years.

What a great example of fine, complex and delicious Lynch Bages. Just arriving to mature, silky tannins, classic Paulliac nose of leather, mineral, plummy, ripe fruit. Long and sweety finish. Just getting expectcular....shall lasts a decade or more

Tight very tight. The wine was opened 2 and a half hours before drinking. Nose of dark current, plumb and tabacco. Tannins are silky smooth. This wine will age for at least another 15 years.

Deep dark ruby color; strong bodied and bold bouquet coming out, with rich burst of red currant and licorice; great structure with rich chewy tannins. A bit bitter on after taste. Needs more cellaring

Sweet fruit; not very sweet; a lot like the '01 but less open and easy. Not giving a lot to me; when it opens this may merit 95+, but to me it was kind of a plain-jane 90 right now. Seems to have the structure to age...

Decanted for 7 hours. After 5 hours this thing was tight as a drum, totally closed for business and very disappointing. And then it relented. The nose is smoky, earthy, full of tobacco, creme de cassis, yet still quite black. On the palate this is massive, black, and closed. Yet there are layers of fruit and extract, dustiness. The finish is tannic, powerful, tight, yet lingering. With a couple more hours this is softening yet at the same time closing. It is a weird, educational experience.

The poor man?s Mouton did well in this vintage but to my taste does not come close to the 1985 ? a triumph which drinks exceptionally well right now. Unfortunately, Lynch Bages has increased in price by over 400% since the '85 vintage release. Darkly colored (like most 2000s) with an airy and open nose of rather off putting funk and animal aromas coupled with primary fruit and wood. Wonderfully smooth and supple in the mouth ? texturally the wine can be drunk with pleasure right now. I would like to see a bit more stuffing in this wine however.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
