Drink Dates 2008-2015

Earthy, extremely intense aromas of new wood, mocha and a beguiling mix of both red and black fruit followed by somewhat austere yet powerful, nicely intense flavors of exceptionally good precision. There is good concentration and density here and mouth coating tannins that are firm but not hard and unlike the Clos St. Denis, there is no finishing astringency. This will require the better part of a decade to soften its substantial structure. By the standards of the vintage, this is a very serious wine.

($113) Perfumed, complex nose melds cherry, raspberry, white pepper and spices, all lifted by a floral topnote. Bright, intensely flavored and tightly wound; intense black cherry, red berry, spice and herbal flavors show excellent clarity and penetration. Finishes very firm and very long, with some youthfully tough but even tannins. A vibrant, rather austere Bonnes-Mares with superb structure and grip for the year. May ultimately merit a higher score.

Very woody style of Chambolle, modern in style, but there is also superb ripe fruit underneath the spicy oak--black fruit with spices and chocolate notes. The tannins clamp down on the finish, at least for now.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
