1999 Marcassin - Pinot Noir Blue Slide Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir - USA - California - Sonoma - Sonoma Coast - Red

USA - California - Sonoma - Sonoma Coast

Red Pinot Noir
Producer Notes

One of the most influential mavens of modern California winemaking, Helen Turley creates in Marcassin wines that are among the most sought-after in California. Though the wines are made following a traditionalist Burgundian style, they are unique, complex representations of California Pinot and Chardonnay. Turley's straightforward winemaking philosophy is, "...great vineyards, meticulously... More »

Already lightly bricking at the edges with subtle secondary hints, including spice, earth and lactic acid aromas followed by ripe, sweet, round and intense medium full flavors that offer good persistence but not much complexity, detail or finesse and frankly the wine seems awkward and not especially well balanced. This is also aging very rapidly and I would be inclined to perhaps wait one more year and then drink over the next 2 to 3 as this will not make old bones.

($75) Medium red. Superripe, rather advanced aromas of raspberry, chocolate, mocha, smoked meat and underbrush. At once thick and penetrating, with complex flavors of raspberry, strawberry, minerals, smoke and spices framed by bright acids. Finishes dense, powerful and long. This held up reasonably well in the glass, but it's far more evolved than a 1999 pinot noir should be today.

The 1999 Pinot Noir Blue Slide Ridge is composed of pure black fruits mixed with floral overtones. It is dense, opulent, and nearly viscous with extraordinary purity and concentration. It comes across as a New World version of perhaps Domaine de la Romanee-Conti's La Tache or Richebourg, or a Claude Dugat or Dugat-Py grand cru. It is an awesome effort that falls just short of perfection.

Dark garnet color, with a broad, rich, intense yet supple range of wild berry, anise, sage and mineral, picking up a touch of rhubarb and black cherry on the finish. Complex and concentrated, the finish exhibits tasty flavor nuances that linger on the palate. 228 cases made.

Probably a year past its prime but this fruit forward wine still has plenty of flavor. Finish not all hat it was.

Tasted in 2007. Agree with Allen but there is some brickish aging going on, yet there is a Burgundian style to this wine that I really like. But, good persistance yet some flabby qualities. Really nice burger wine... Drink up before 2009

A more brooding, darker, and masculine wine than the elegant and forward 98 Blue Slide. Reminds me of a riper version of the 1990 Pommard Les Rugiens from Armand and Aleth Girardin (still not close to maturity fyi). Slightly cloudy deep black/red colored wine with initially reticent aromas of stone, plum, earth, oyster shells, smoke, mint, rose, blood, sandalwood, sappy dark fruits, new oak, vanilla, and sweet anise biscotti. After airing, the wine?s aromatic profile changes with each time I nose it while all the while growing in complexity and magnitude. Tremendous (almost painful at present) concentration with persistent flavors of immature and unformed fruit and smoky oak. Tannins are considerable but the wine has more than enough power to counter the tannins. Acids are slightly higher than I prefer. The wine?s length is amazing ? you can taste the different nuances of fruit lingering on your palate for at least ten minutes after actually consuming the wine. The fact that this wine comes from young vines whets my appetite for more ? I wish these wines would be released earlier in their lives and on a more regular schedule. Despite its power this wine remains undoubtedly Pinot Noir. Needs time in the cellar to reveal all it has to offer ? drink 2008 to 2015+. The wine grows in the glass and keeps getting bigger and more aromatically complex with each passing moment. One of the most concentrated Pinot Noirs (without becoming a caricature) I have tasted.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
