Bright ruby-red. High-toned aromas of redcurrant, leather, tobacco, cedar and nuts. Fairly supple and nicely concentrated, if in a somewhat rustic style. Could use a bit more nuance. Finishes with tongue-coating, slightly dry-edged tannins.

The deep ruby/purple-colored 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga Cuvee (75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot) reveals more intensity and flavor out of bottle than it did from cask. Ten to twenty percent new oak was utilized. The sweet nose of black cherries and currants is followed by a medium-bodied red displaying notions of earth, licorice, tobacco, and spice. It is a supple-textured, delicious Cabernet to enjoy over the next 10-12 years.

Defty balanced, with ripe fruit and fresh leather, currant, blackberry and black cherry flavors. Tannins are supple, ripe and well-integrated, making this an ideal choice for near-term drinking. An excellent value. 8,500 cases made.

Montelen's second Cabernet consists of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. Despite the cepage, the wine presents with many Zinfandel characteristics. Medium ruby red with briary aromas of black cherry. Surprisingly tannic (characteristic of the '99 vintage) with good acidity.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
