1999 Araujo - Syrah Eisele Vineyard Syrah - USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley - Red

USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley

Red Syrah
Producer Notes

The mission statement reads, in part, "To produce organically grown fruit and with this fruit make a singular wine of the highest caliber and distinction." By all accounts, Bart and Daphne Araujo are succeeding magnificently. The flagship wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon from their own Eisele Vineyards, is hailed by critics and desired by consumers in every vintage. Though first planted to Zinfandel... More »

Red-ruby. Flamboyant aromas of black raspberry, Cuban tobacco, animal fur, flint, mocha and tar. Very dense and intensely flavored, with firm but harmonious acidity giving shape to the flavors. Tight but sweet on the finish, with a note of graphite. The percentage of new oak has gone down steadily since the first vintage in 1994 and is now 50%. The wine's 6% viognier component serves "to open the wine, to broaden it," says winemaker Francoise Peschon.

The 1999 Syrah Eisele Vineyard (a blend of 94% Syrah and 6% Viognier) boasts an opaque ruby/purple color along with gorgeous, complex aromatics of melted asphalt, graphite, blackberry liqueur, coffee, and a hint of pepper. This full-bodied Syrah reveals surprising freshness, finesse, and elegance despite its size. The wine is long, rich, and French in style. It is best drunk over the next 10-15 years. Araujo's Syrah program continues to impress. Crop levels have dropped even lower, resulting in a small production (generally less than 400 cases per vintage).

This is a beautifully put together harmonious Syrah. Dark black red color with a soaring complex nose of vanilla spice, slight game, white pepper, black fruits, and licorice. Persistent flavors that echo the nose coat the palate. Supple tannins and perfect acidity are hallmarks of this wine. Because of the wine?s balance, it can be drunk now but cellaring for up to another 12 to 15 years is possible. Tasting this wine always makes me wish more acreage in Northern Napa Valley was devoted to this varietal. Somewhat reminiscent of La Mouline.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
