1999 Williams Selyem - Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard Pinot Noir - USA - California - Sonoma - Sonoma Coast - Red

USA - California - Sonoma - Sonoma Coast

Red Pinot Noir
Producer Notes

The emergence of Williams Selyem as one of California's Pinot Noir leaders is an improbable success story. Founders Burt Williams and Ed Selyem started making wine under the Hacienda del Rio Winery label in a garage in Fulton. Their first wine was a 1981 Zinfandel, but very soon after they began their quest for great Pinot Noir. By the late 1980s, Williams had retired as a typesetter and Selyem... More »

Full red-ruby. Sappy raspberry, cherry cola, green tea, violet and pepper on the nose. Bright, tightly wound and pure, with pungently fresh berry flavors enlivened by brisk, harmonious acids. Very long and precise on the uncompromisingly dry finish, which features solid tannic spine. The crop level here was less than a ton an acre in '99, according to Cabral. Very promising pinot built for long life.

Fresh nose with that primary smell of pre-fermentation cold soak (don't remember this from the previous regime). Very different from most California Pinots. Quite tough. No tendresse. Chewy. Very, very youthful. May get there but for the moment it is certainly not charming.

The 1999 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard (1,100 cases) exhibits that vineyard's tell-tale meaty, black cherry, and mineral-like characteristics as well as a sinewy, muscular, concentrated, firm palate, high acidity, and plenty of broodingly backward black fruits. It will need time in the bottle.

Distinctive and assertive. Rich, intense and concentrated, with layers of black cherry, wild berry, plum and mineral that are backed by mouthcoating tannins. 1,159 cases made.

Agree with Tanzer. Very approachable without the typical "candied" fruits that often are with these wines. Due to the vineyard strenth. Next one try in 2009

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
