In the tough '98 vintage, Pahlmeyer declassified 30% of the production from his proprietary red. Made of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec, this medium blood red hued wine has lots of thin legs displaying light coloration. Raised in new French oak for 18 months, the wine displays attractive though simple warm aromas of chocolate, toast, dust, and plum. Lacks the pizzazz of most Pahlmeyer wines. Moderate velvety tannins and slight high acidity give the wine good structure but there just isn'tenough fruit on its bones for it to be considered great.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
