1997 Joseph Phelps - Insignia Bordeaux Blend - USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley - Red

USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley

Red Bordeaux Blend
Producer Notes

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.

Firm tannin. med/high acidity. Aged well, still have several years left . Good but not spectacular.

Beautiful, seamless mature wine. Clear, deep ruby color. Aromas of leather, tobacco, dried herbs. Some nice fruit left, but it was in the back ground. This bottle was perfectly balanced, lively, with very silky tannins- one of those wines that was so easy to drink. On the first sip I detected a bit of oak on the finish but never noticed it again after that. I think this has the structure and body to age at least 10 more years for those that like older wine, but it is drinking beautifully right now if you like a bit of fruit remaining

A bit more 'mature' than I expected but multi-dimensional, balanced, soft tannins - I could drink it all evening (and did). Didn't notice that the magnum was any fresher than the 750s. A wonderful wine.

Drinking beautifully. Dark purple. Cedar and vanilla on the nose. Asian spice and caramel on the palate. Long finish. Plenty of life left.

Very solid Napa red but the finish was weaker than expected. Also concerned because the QPR is just not there. Definitely willing to drink this as a gift but I wouldn't spend the money on it again myself.

Nice wine, but it followed a bottle of 2003 Harlan Estate, and did not hold up. Hard to say just how good this would have been on it's own. Rating is just a stab in the dark.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
