1997 Soldera (Case Basse) - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Sangiovese - Italy - Tuscany - Brunello di Montalcino - Red

Italy - Tuscany - Brunello di Montalcino

Red Sangiovese
Producer Notes

Located in the southwest region of Montalcino, Case Basse is a tiny estate whose dedicated owners, Gianfranco and Graziella Soldera, create Brunellos of exacting and exceptional quality. Many consider these wines the epitome of premier Brunello, as they are powerful, rustic and age-worthy. Soldera seamlessly links traditional vineyard cultivation with natural style winemaking. The vines are... More »

($473) Good full red. Knockout pungent nose melds strawberry, iron, dried flowers, tobacco, minerals and earth. Silky and seamless but also gripping, with a powerful spine of acidity framing and carrying the pungent strawberry, raspberry, rose petal and mineral flavors. A brilliantly focused Brunello of compelling intensity and structure. Expands impressively in the mouth and finishes with outstanding brightness and subtle length, not to mention grip of steel. Gianfranco Soldera routinely ages his Brunello riserva in barrel for 54 months, and like the best classic old-style Barolos that spent forever in wood, this has the structure to develop in bottle for at least 15 to 20 years. The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Case Basse, which spent over four years in cask, is medium garnet in color but brilliant and vivid in hue. The intense and elegant aromas of wild cherries, red currants, cinnamon, and blood oranges are followed by a palate of superior continuity, energy, and drive. Medium to full-bodied but fine grained and silky, it is focused, long and of superior persistence. The 1997 is closer in style to the 1995 than the blockbuster Brunello Riservas produced in 1983, 1985, 1990 and 1993, something of which Soldera seems well aware. He did not produce his single-vineyard Intistieti Riserva. After a slight stumble in 1996, Gianfranco Soldera is back in full stride. The man is a controversial figure in Montalcino, but a large part of the antagonism of his peers is simply due to the fact that his wines are indisputably better, the best in the zone in fact.

Gave it 4 hours to breathe. Needed more, this wine is still very young. Big wine dark fruits, leather and smoke. Will try again in 3 years.

One of the most enjoyable exercises in wine is contrasting two vintages of Soldera, glasses juxtaposed to one another. The 1997 is a much less evolved, riper wine that is typified by a more powerful, denser personality. The nose hints at the exotic, with a rich bouquet of deeply flavored cocoa, wild truffles, rose petals, cherry liqueur, cedar, black olives and strawberry perfume. The wine is purity personified throughout the palate, w/ a slight roasted touch to its admirably dense flavors that are persuasive, compelling and punctuated with an amazingly penetrating finish. If I have the good fortune of going back to this wine in the next 5-10 years, I may be able to witness perfection in the glass

Taste of Italy at home with friends
We used a get together as an excuse to traverse italian wines with some of our favorite foods at home.  We started with a 1997 Felsina Chianti Classico paired with classic antipasto of smoked ham and vegetables (we saved the...

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
