Half bottle. Deep gold, savoury/sour apricot and orange peel aromas. Intense, viscous, dense and there's a slightly grippy texture on the palate still. Great depth, notes of almond and baked apple and all that sweetness counterbalanced by bracing acidity. Still seems so young, and promises more. (JH)

Compared with the flamboyant aromatics of the 1997, Yquem's 1996 plays it closer to the vest, although there is a lot going on. Light gold with a tight but promising nose of roasted hazelnuts intermixed with creme brulee, vanilla beans, honey, orange marmalade, and peaches, this medium to full-bodied offering reveals loads of power in its restrained, measured personality. There is admirable acidity, weight, texture, and purity in this impeccably made Yquem. However, patience will be a virtue.

Wow. Where to begin. Even on the initial pour the aromas are shocking. It is difficult to describe, besides being Yquem. Notes of caramel and egg custard, the muskiness of Yquem, hints of caramelized sugar. On the palate, dried tropical fruit, brown sugar, caramel, and an immense sweetness that is perfectly counterbalanced by the (somehow) intense acidity. The mouthfeel isn't quite as round as the '95, and this one feels a little more angular. The finish goes on to eternity.

Vibrant gold colour. Dense fruity nose with apricot, vanilla and marzipan. Viscous, sweet succulent palate perfectly balanced by the lively acidity. Excellent botrytis flavours that develop for minutes in the mouth: intense sweet apricot, barley sugar and golden syrup. A lovely spicyness at the back of the throat. Incredibly long lingering honeyed flavour in the finish.

Medium gold colored wine with a bright very aromatic bouquet of apricot, stone, vanilla spice, and honey. Nicely viscous with excellent balancing acidity. Not as sweet or as powerful as more vaunted vintages of Yquem but still deft and elegant with lasting flavors. A dinner Yquem.

Mixed week...
A mixed week.  Enjoyed a 1990 Yquem.  What a great wine!  Bought a 1996 (which I have not owned before) and 2002 Yquem to add to the collection.  Sounds like a great week, huh?  Well we opened our 1967...
