1996 Lynch-Bages Bordeaux Blend - France - Bordeaux - Pauillac - Red - Fifth Growth

France - Bordeaux - Pauillac

Red Bordeaux Blend - Fifth Growth
Producer Notes

Located just outside the town of Pauillac, Chateau Lynch Bages is famous for its Cabernet-based wines, which typify the best of the appellation. The estate is classified as one of eighteen Fifth Growths from the official 1855 classification; many experts, though, would argue that its quality merits it a place among the Second Growths. Typical Lynch-Bages reveals a wonderful bouquet, rich tannins,... More »

(79% cabernet sauvignon, 13% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 5.2 g/l total acidity; 13% alcohol): Dark ruby-red with a hint of garnet. Cabernet sauvignon-typical aromas of blackcurrant, violet, tobacco, dried herbs and minerals, complicated by a touch of smoky oak. In a distinctly firm, structured style, but with juicy acidity intensifying the dark berry and mineral flavors. Building flesh and sweetness on the back half counterbalances the wine's firm spine, spreading out nicely on the lingering finish. Though currently a little clenched and austere, this wine offers excellent precision and wonderful balance.

Mid ruby. Savoury nose reminiscent of wet stones and then a real weight of ripe fruit. Still some greenness on the finish but this seems a bit more set for future development than most.

The 1996 exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color that is just beginning to lighten at the edge, surprisingly velvety tannins and a classic Pauillac bouquet of lead pencil shavings, cedarwood, black currants, sweet cherries and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, elegant, savory, broad wine is still five years away from full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years.

Deep, dark ruby with intense aromas of mint, berries and currants. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a delicious ripe fruit and lead-pencil aftertaste. Very fine indeed. Typically outstanding for Lynch-Bages. 35,000 cases made.

Very nice. Integrated well but not nearly like the 1989.

This is still drinking young. Classic Lynch Bages, but not sure that it will be the equal of 90. It needs 2 hours of air to show cedar and casis on the nose and palate.

meaty and angular with a rustic, slightly damp smell (not corked though, just 'wet'. Austere with focused spices first, but then it really softens up the mouth with a nice mouth coating feel. Acidity still very strong and lasting on the finish. Rough tannins, but in a good way that melt in your mouth and on the finish.

Amazing purity, creme de cassis and delineation in a wine that can drink right out of the bottle but still has 5-7 years to go. This wine has the tarry nuances of Mouton at 1/3 the price. A true pleasure in the bottle, velvety tannins with forward cabernet dark fruits in the nose and taste. Enjoy now and over the next 3-5 years.

The first of the group was crisp, mature and full of complexity. Notions of tobacco, pepper, licorice, tilled earth, truffles and black currant are bright, medium bodied and have a bit of a chewy disposition. While the wine is by no means a blockbuster, it is noble and full of charm and is sure to satiate any fan of finesse-driven Cabernet

Certainly at maturation plateau, not likely to get much, if any, better. Very food friendly on the night we had it. As Coates would say, "Fine."

Dark black colored wine with no signs of aging. Anise, dark fruits, spice, aged beef aromas. Well balanced with plenty of tannin and acidity. Drink 2012 to 2022.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
