Red Bordeaux Blend - Second Growth
Producer Notes

Located in the appellation of Saint-Julien, Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou is named for the beautiful large stones and pebbles that cover the vineyard. These stones create ideal grape-growing conditions, as they aid in drainage, reflect sun onto the vines, and keep the ground from drying out. These conditions create the "typical" Saint-Julien wine - elegant and smooth, with a long finish. The... More »

Beautifully made Bordeaux. Medium ruby in the glass, with nose including flowers and dark red fruit. Fruit and tannins are extremely well balanced now, and could be a clone of the Chateau Lafite Rothschild from this year, although the Ducru does not quite have the same finesse. Long finish with notes of graphite.

Excellent and classic. Now that this has a bit of age on it, it's ready to enjoy. Dark fruit, some minerally notes, and mellowing but quite present tannins made this very enjoyable.

Excellent; classical Bordeaux nose, taste, and finish. Elegant, deep, well structured. Still very young with 20-30 years more to go. One of the best wines of the vintage? Stood out in a blind tasting of "Guess the red" with everybody saying right away, this is a Bordeaux that has been around for 10-15 years.

Wow - took 4 days for this guy to open up, and even then it was still half-asleep. All the components are there but restrained. Purple rim with blueberries, pencil, leather, and a tannic backbone. Closed for business but in 10 years look out!

As soon as the bottle was poured into a decanter the entire table couldn't help but notice the aromas from their seats. Great nose of ripe dark fruit. My score is based almost entirely on the nose as the wine doesn;t quite seem ready in the mouth. While the fruit is big, it's ripeness combined with the tannins suggest this wwine should continue to evolve for a few more years. This was the first bottle I have had from the case and will likely wait until 2010 to try another.

A much more brooding wine than the first not only in stature but in it?s intensely wound persona. Ripe and still a bit backward, this Cabernet yielded notes of violet, cr?me de cassis, cedar, graphite and dried porcini mushrooms as it sat in the glass. This savory, mineral rich, plump red still needs some time to fully bloom, but it?s quality is currently undeniable

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
