Red Bordeaux Blend - Second Growth
Producer Notes

This Bordeaux chateau is a Second Growth property located in the Left Bank commune of Margaux. The estate was purchased by Pierre des Mesures de Rauzan in 1661, but the land had been divided in two by the time of the 1855 Medoc classification. The two vineyards remain today, Rauzan-Segla and Rauzan-Gassies. Phylloxera plagued the vineyards in the 1860s, leaving them ravaged for the next few... More »

Saturated ruby-red, even darker than the '96. Currant, raspberry, tobacco and cedary oak on the nose. Full and sweet in the middle palate, with strong, lively flavors. Here the toothcoating tannins seem slightly less well integrated today but they are ripe and even. Really creamy in the mouth, but with the structure to age.

First entire vintage of the new owners who arrive in July 1994. Much darker and more concentrated than the 1996. Some floral fragrance but more obvious ripeness on the nose than the fresher 1996. Very solid with rather winning framework. Very dry rather than sweet on the finish. Solid with some still-inky tannins. Lots of chew but pretty magnificent, for the future. Hot, dry summer has made quite a bruiser of a vintage with very firm tannins.

This wine was consistently outstanding from cask, and I suspect it may eventually merit an even higher score, but it was totally closed when I saw it in November. Unfortunately, it was one of the few wines that I was only able to taste once after bottling. Nevertheless, it is a classic vin de garde, with a saturated ruby/purple color, and a tight but promising nose of sweet plum and cassis fruit intertwined with underbrush, vanillin, and licorice scents. The wine is ripe, medium to full-bodied, and rich, as well as unyielding, ferociously tannic, pure, and layered. The finish is extremely dry (sec, as the French would say), with a brooding angularity and toughness. In spite of this, my instincts suggest the requisite depth is present to balance out the structure. This effort will also require a decade of cellaring.

Very ripe, with an almost raisiny edge. Light vanilla flavor. Full-bodied, with lots of ripe fruit and a long, caressing, silky finish. Gorgeous wine. A couple more years will make it just right.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. 8,300 cases made.

Dark red robe; dark cherry and plum on the nose, with a slight must smell; medium bodied, mellow wine with only limited tannins; plum, leather and clove on the palate; hint of spice; nice length and good balance, pleasant finish;

Youthful color--dark purple with little sign of age. Pretty perfumed nose of flowers, red licorice and a touch of vanilla. Fully resolved tannins on the palate, which is dominated by dark fruit and a little earth. Elegant and feminine...very nice but not profound.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
