Dark red-ruby. Closed nose hints at black cherry, licorice and herbs; suggestion of crystallized fruit. Intensely flavored and vibrant but stubbornly backward on the palate; offers cool flavors of cherry and cassis leaf. Very young and quite persistent on the back end. May ultimately merit an even higher score.

Modest, dry and with a grippy tannin. Fairly benign sort of fruit and not a hugely charming glassful, with the tannin sticking its elbows out a bit too much. (RH)

Dark-ruby-colored, the Clos Vougeot displays Asian spices and oak-imbued aromas and a highly-extracted, deeply concentrated, full-bodied, tannic, chewy flavor profile packed with layers of dark fruits. Drink it between 2002-2010. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy in Washington, D.C. in April. The wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Pinot Noir, a fragile varietal, reacts poorly to fining, filtration, and careless bottling techniques, I recommend caution when considering buying a red burgundy based on cask samples. I called it as I tasted it, and hope the bottled wine reflects the quality of the samples I was provided.

This tough, angular Clos Vougeot is quite woody and somewhat dry, but there is ripe and exuberant plum and blackberry character beneath. Full-bodied.

(decanted one hour before) Good color showing some maturity; nose has begun to open since last tasted showing lovely, mainly black, with herbs, mint and spice; rich & fat; lots of backbone; very good tannins, softening but still a bit hard; masculine; lots of concentration; full, rich & complex; very good fruit; not quite the concentration & depth for great but certainly fine; long, balanced finish; ready but will drink well and possibly develop further over the next decade.

Tightly wound-tannic. Delicious fruit starting to show.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
