1995 Ducru-Beaucaillou Bordeaux Blend - France - Bordeaux - St Julien - Red - Second Growth

Red Bordeaux Blend - Second Growth
Producer Notes

Located in the appellation of Saint-Julien, Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou is named for the beautiful large stones and pebbles that cover the vineyard. These stones create ideal grape-growing conditions, as they aid in drainage, reflect sun onto the vines, and keep the ground from drying out. These conditions create the "typical" Saint-Julien wine - elegant and smooth, with a long finish. The... More »

A clean, high-polished surface, almost black with a slight tinge of purple. A pure nose of cassis fruit, very primary with no apparent signs of age at the surface, intensely perfumed and concentrated. Full-bodied with masses of sweet, dark berry fruit, very California like on the entry. This wine has achieved super balance and incredible purity and weight. Medium length, but It makes up with the sheer elegance. Drink now through 2020

Starting to fade a bit. Still tastes of dark berries, but a little tar in the finish, while remaining full bodied.

Lovely: Smoke and blueberry on the nose. Cassis, fine tannins and dark red fruit on the palate. Long finish. This drinks lighter than expected for a St. Julian Bordeaux and has hit its prime drinking window.

This one needs some breathe time. Drank right after corking and over 1.5 hours. Wish I had given it at least 2 hours before drinking. The last glass was by far the best! Absolutely amazing how much it changed. By the 1.5 hour mark the finnish was substantially longer and velvety. Big nose with concentrated sweet dark berries. I will decant for 2 hours before touching it net bottle.

Very dark and deep, with a huge nose of violets and earth. Rich black and red berries, crème de casis, floral and spice too, with tannins still present. Seemed to have it all, wrapped in velvet with a long, elegant finish.

Last tasted in May 2008, this bottle from the same auction source. Opened and evolved on the table, clearly improving and gaining power & aromatics as the night progressed. Youthful and vigorous, showing nice balance, perhaps more to the lean than the lush side, but no lack of fruit, grip or structure. These continue to signal they are on the ascension, with very long life. Late in the second hour a little more earthy depth emerged. Delicious. Shared with good friends who brought a beautiful 1982 Gruaud Larose which, by way of comparison, was completely integrated and very comfortably beautiful to enjoy.

Delicious Bordeaux. Great complexity. Good fruit, supple mouthfeel, elegant. Tannins integrating nicely. Good mid-palate and nice finish. Rewarded after decanting for 30 minutes.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
