Le Vieux Donjon was founded by Marcel Michel, who did the first bottling at his domain in 1966. Since 1979 Marie Jose and Lucien Michel have run the property. The estate includes 14 ha of Chateauneuf du Pape, of which one ha is planted to white varieties. Perfectly mature, easy drinking with a fair amount of complexity left, but needs to be drunk soon! The nose was minimal. Fair amount of body left. tannins and fruit were well balanced. Some smoke. cedar notes. still berry/dark fruits.

I find this to be a great example of how 'a little green? can go a long way. There were certain leafy elements to this wine throughout the nose and the palate that called to mind cabbage, celery stalk and romaine lettuce, but they were nearly submerged in crushed rock, tilled soil, dark plum, cocoa and pepper elements that I found it to be a harmonious match. This wine was suavely textured, earthy and elegant, with very nice length, but was not a profound Donjon as it didn'tpack in the generous pleasure that the best vintages of this wine deliver
