Ruby-red, not quite as deep as the '96. Exotic, sweet aromas of currant, lead pencil, spice and woodsmoke. A huge wine that conveys a sense of sheer power, but not quite as delineated or stylish as the '96. This really explodes on the aftertaste, but the '96 is more subtle. Clearly first-growth size, but less fine than the '96.

Served from magnum. Deep garnet, ruby rim. Fine mineral nose and more reticent than the Margaux 1995 tasted alongside. Firm but paper-fine tannins that slide across the palate. The tannins are just perfect. Melt in the mouth but still giving shape. Starts to open up in the glass but retains that elegance and restraint which is so beguiling. Very long finish. (JH)

Bottled in June, 1997, this profound Mouton is more accessible than the more muscular 1996. A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 19% Merlot, it reveals an opaque purple color, and reluctant aromas of cassis, truffles, coffee, licorice, and spice. In the mouth, the wine is "great stuff," with superb density, a full-bodied personality, rich mid-palate, and a layered, profound finish that lasts for 40+ seconds. There is outstanding purity and high tannin, but my instincts suggest this wine is lower in acidity and slightly fleshier than the brawnier, bigger 1996. Both are great efforts from Mouton-Rothschild.

This classic wine is only showing a portion of what it's got to offer, but it's excellent even so. Inky in color, with masses of berry, violet, mint, mineral and cherry character, and full in body, with tons of velvety tannins and a moderate finish. Needs time to open.

We had this as part of a Cabernet Sauvignon tasting on 10/3/09. It was truly spectacular with a slightly reserved bouquet of cassis, blackberry, truffle, coffee, spice and vanilla aromas. The palate was velvety smooth, balanced and well integrated with black currant, blackberry, black cherry, coffee, vanilla and spice flavors. Absolutely AWESOME!

Retail purchase, held over a year. Decanted a couple of hours. Rich and rewarding, deep reserves of power, black fruit, lead pencil and a forest/mint aroma profile, confirmed on a long frame of cedar. This wine has years ahead at the top of its game. In Magnum, and in celebration. Wonderful wine and a real treat to share. Will look for a replacement if prices drop more.

Rough and dry with a pretty closed and tough nose. Very rustic with a chocolate and spicy finish that was disappointing in it's brevity.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
